portrait processes & fees

The Process

To begin the portrait process, the client and I will discuss expectations for the portrait. During the initial meeting, we will explore poses of the subject in various gestures, lighting conditions and background settings. Detailed photo reference will be obtained. If a sitting is not convenient the client will provide suitable photographs. Posthumous portraits require several good quality photographs. I will return to my studio and assemble the best photos/poses and email these to the client for their choosing or schedule a follow-up meeting for this purpose. Upon consent, I will begin painting the portrait. Delivery is arranged upon completion and final client approval. Commissions usually take 3 to 4 months.

Portrait Fees

Fees start at $450 for a small (16x20) head and shoulders portrait.

Additional costs are based on the following factors: the number of people or pets in the painting; the intricacy of clothing, jewelry and props, the complexity of the background setting, and the actual size of the canvas. For each additional figure in the same portrait add 60%, pets add 25%.  A non-refundable deposit of 40% is required to begin the painting process. Balance due at completion of the commission and acceptance of the client.

The above prices do not include sales tax, framing, shipping/insurance, or travel/lodging expenses.
